Yes, it should detect ffmpeg automatically, but the default is to use gstreamer. --enable-media=ffmpeg tells it to use ffmpeg instead. > is that because my hardware requirement is not met for gnash which > caused the video very slow? It's more likely that gstreamer is not efficient enough.
