For new enough X servers, that's right.  OTOH, it remains an easy way to
express preferences and for testing.(*)

I did not see anything about "nouveau" in your log file, hence my
suggestion to give that hint in the xorg.conf.

*: For years I was running older X server software because that
particular version yielded the highest performance for my Radeon card
without depending on non-free firmware.  xorg.conf was very handy in
this situation.
