What was not expected is that the ink quality of the refill absolutely sucked. It smudged, took forever to dry, and couldn't print in high resolution. It also only lasted about 20-40% as long as an original cartridge. Then I needed to refill it again.

Trying "ink refills" via Google make it clear there are a million people trying to sell this stuff, but likely only a few manufacturers. many of the sites have pretty detailed instructions, and the cartridges have their initial fill port where they can be refilled using supplied blunt-tipped syringes. I'll post my experiences to the board, if anyone's interested.
