Absolutely. But you're thinking about the right thing to do from a product prospective rather than maximizing quarterly profits. Sure, they finally had to clean up that code to get the recent 64-bit code out the door, but they also sat on the money it would have taken to do it in 1994 for a decade, probably at least quadrupling the value of that money.
