Use emacs: http://elpoint.sourceforge.net/ http://www.mew.org/~kazu/proj/goby/index.html.en I have no idea how well either of these modes work, but it's got to be better than hacking xhtml. If you insist upon hacking xhtml use emacs' nxhtml and nxml modes.
