First of all, I will echo Ben's suggestion not to miss an event just because it is "business oriented", particularly if the Trade show is free, and even more so if it is local.
Secondly, you did not mention your nephew's age. Unfortunately some of the "commercial" events (such as Linuxworld) exclude people younger than 18-21. That having been said, your nephew just missed "Penguicon" for this year: http://www.penguicon.org/ but next year it will be held on May 1st to May 3rd. How do I know?...well, on December 13th, 2007 they asked me to speak at the 2009 meeting.... The Red Hat Summit is coming up in Boston. Unfortunately there is also a pretty hefty price tag ($695. for a student) to attend. Ubuntu often has "social groups" that put on events. You can find them through their web pages. If you do not mind traveling, there are a couple of good events each year: 02_08-02_10 Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) Large, volunteer-driven event in Los Angeles 02_23-02_24 Fossdem, Belgium Large Developer and End User Conference held once a year in Belgium. Conference is free, which is why so many developers go there. No trade show, only tables 05_28-05_31 LinuxTag, Berlin Large Developer and End User Conference (10,000 expected, 9600 last year).
