About the presentation:

Replication is one of the most useful features of MySQL. With
replication, one can architect an asynchronous, scaled-out, redundant,
distributed, and efficient paradigm that provides data to Web or other
applications, either within or even across data centers.

Patrick will discuss various replication schemes,
their advantages and detriments of each.

He will explain how to set up replication using his recent experience
with a multimaster replication set-up he used to build a database
architecture for Grazr.com that spans multiple data centers, and cover
his experience over the past year about what he has learned about
replication:

    * Multimaster setup
    * Slave setup
    * Error recovery
    * Monitoring
    * Backups
    * Hardware, OS requirements
    * Apache/Web server needs
    * Live demonstration on how to set up a local multimaster, for
testing code in a simulated live setup.

Also a question and answer session.

About Patrick:

Patrick Galbraith first discovered the joy of working with Linux in 1993
over a long weekend and 26 floppy disks -- downloading each over a 2400
baud modem via UNC Sunsite, onto his Packard Bell. He has since been
immersed in using and developing Open Source software. After a several
years at various companies promoting the use of Open Source Software, he
went on to work at Andover.net in 1999 (later acquired by VA Linux,
OSDN), who just happened at that time to acquire Slashdot.org. One day
he accidentally walked into a meeting about Slashdot and walked out
being responsible for open-sourcing the Slashdot source code, as well as
working on features that allowed Slashdot.org handle increased traffic.
While there, Patrick, Brian Aker, and Chris Nandor released Slashcode,
the Open Source code project of the Slashdot codebase. Some of his
particular contributions to Slashcode were the comment filtering,
formkeys (to prevent robot and other abusive repetitious posting),
catfood (excessive posting detection), as well as caching functionality.
It was also during this time he met Monty Widenius and David Axmark who
were working with OSDN to develop replication for MySQL.

After three years at OSDN, he moved on to work various contract
positions developing perl applications at companies such as TMobile and
Classmates.org. In 2003, he was offered a great opportunity to work at
MySQL AB, developing and maintaining various projects such as
DBD::mysql, Federated Storage Engine, mysqlslap, mysqldump, bug fixing
as well as assisting the documentation and build teams.
Until recently, Patrick was working at Grazr Corp. where he has
drawn on all his knowledge and experience developing a great,
one-of-its-kind system for collecting, managing, sharing and merging
feeds.

He just began working at Lycos as a Principle Software Engineer.

He's currently is involved with Open Source projects:
maintaining and developing the FederatedX Storage Engine, Memcached
Functions for MySQL, is the public maintainer of DBD::mysql (mysql perl
driver), libmemcached C++ library, as well as other projects.

In his "spare" time, he is part-owner of a Wireless Broadband company,
Radius North, providing Internet service in rural New Hampshire to
customers not within DSL or Cable service. He also enjoys hiking,
studying languages, nature watching, projects such as building barns and
sheds, as well as cooking Thai and Indian food. Above all, he enjoys
being with the love of his life, Ruth, who is a Naturopathic Doctor.
