As others have pointed out the gimp has a rather "opaque" interface...
But, once you get used to it, it is fast and even intuitive, just
like vi :)

To make the Clone feature work, you need to select the image region
you want to clone.  You do that by holding down the Ctrl key and
left clicking in the image.  A good idea is to make sure you have
at least the "Tool Options" and "Brushes" dialog boxes open.
You can open them by right clicking on the canvas, and following
the "Dialogs" menu.  If the clone is copying too much or too little
you may need to change your brush size.

And remember, the Ctrl and Shift keys are your friend in the gimp!
