Dana,
        Mediaone does register the MAC address when they do the setup. The DHCP
server will only honor requests that come from a system with a registered MAC.
The best way to handle this (and I know you don't want to hear it) is to set
up a Linux box with 2 NICs to do the routing. It's all fairly easy, and
everything that you need to know is in the Net3-HOWTO, the Firewall-HOWTO, and
the Cable-modem-HOWTO (all available @ meatalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/howto).
