Also, since it smells like you did a new installation, your old
/etc/isapnp.conf file might have been blown away. You'll need to
run the isapnp config program and set that stuff up again. I don't
have the info here at work, but I can check my system at home
tonight and send it to you.

Is the modem running under minicom? That's generally a great
troubleshooting tool for situations like this.
