  I am of two minds about this one.

  On the one hand, behavior like this had led to no end of trouble for all
sorts of people, myself included.

  On the other hand, far too many commercial software vendors seem to
worship at the altar of the God of Backwards Compatibility, to the detriment
of their products and users.

  I suspect there may be no "good" answer to this problem.
