   I believe the technology you're thinking of is "CD Text":

   I'm not sure cdrecord CAN do this yet.  A little searching led me to 
X-CD-Roast which, as of 18 Jul 2001, claims:

   This may have changed by now, but I don't think so.  I haven't bothered 
to investigate further since the only players I have that do CD Text will 
also do MP3+ID3, and I prefer that format. ;)
