Is there ever a case where RPM will know about something *not* 
installed via RPM?  Is there some way to update the database with 
package info about something installed from source that I'm not aware 
of?  That would be really cool, IMO!

While I agree with you in general, if you know all the dependancies for this 
package are installed (probably from source) in the same place rpm would've
installed them (okay, this is *highly* unlikely :) then you should be okay.

But I think Ben's right, if you have to --force something, then that 
usually means that you should re-think what you're about to do and 
consider some other alternative.
