Intel 440GX Chipset? If so, it's a known problem with buggy bioses on these boards. The only known fixes/workarounds are to enable IO_APIC in the kernel, which should be enabled in the install kernel, or use the smp kernel. But, unfortunately, it's been reported that it doesn't always work. If it's not a 440GX chipset, I'm not sure what the problem is, but it could be related. If you can install the OS on the disk by putting it in a different system and then make sure the kernel-smp package is installed and configured to boot, you might have better luck. Hope that helps.
