My friend's friend, Chris, thanks you all for your help, and yes it worked (what 'it' is that worked I don't know) and his MBR is 'fixed'. Maddog came up with the good idea of taking his dad to a GNHLUG meeting to explain that Linux isn't some evil-software-piracy-thing-just-because-you-don't-neccesarily-have-to-pay-for-it.
