I believe it will update the original file, the daemon follows
symlinks. Dropbox have documented the use of symlinks to sync files
outside the ~/Dropbox folder, so I hope this shouldn't be a major
shock to existing users. I will double check that this is the actual
behaviour however.
Also, although items in the Public folder are viewable by anybody over
the web, it's a read only process so there should be little risk of
somebody accidentally/maliciously modifying your original files.
