File is most likely encoded as ISO-8859-2. Try passing it through iconv first: $ iconv -f ISO-8859-2 -t UTF-8 <hr.po >hr2.po && mv hr2.po hr.po Or, simply enter charset=ISO-8859-2 in the header field (though, I'd recommend using UTF-8 for all languages in Gtk+-based programs).
