Although a bit late, perhaps helpful: Such a rule is to be displayed
at each melisma, i.e. more than one note belonging to the same
syllable, unless this syllable is not the last one of a word (in this
case hyphenation takes place instead). The rule's left end is aligned
with the right end of the belonging syllable, with a bit white space
in between. Note that punctuation characters immediately following the
syllable are still attached to the syllable's end (e.g. "he said:____"
and not "he said____:"). The right end of the rule is aligned with the
right edge of the last notehead of the melisma.

The rule can be omitted if the syllable is as wide or even wider than
the note sequence of the melisma. Concerning the syllable alignment,
it is good style to have it flush-left with the first melisma note
(i.e. both the notes and the syllable of the melisma begin at the same
horizontal position and extend to the right) instead of centering it
under any note.

Rainer
