Clef syntax?

What would you think of changing the clef syntax from
  \clef bass; 
into
  \clef \bass;

If you think this is an acceptable change, I'll send a patch
that makes it easy to customize clef names to your local language.
I still don't see any clear logic on which syntactic elements 
should be escaped with a backslash, and guess this change would
rather make the syntax more uniform.
