Two notes on the same stem are on the same beat. The placement on the
stem is irrelevant to the interpretation. You think you want to change
that, but you really really really don't. :-)

Playing a note a hair sooner is called an accent. That is the only
way that you have accents in music. Many, maybe even most people
think that an accent is made by playing a note louder. They are
wrong. I can play accented notes softer and unaccented notes louder
and so can anyone who makes the effort. It isn't that hard.

I saw absolute proof about 35 years ago on film. They used a
concert pianist playing Brahms and a high speed camera and
an oscilloscope (ancestor of the TV tube), and demonstrated
experimentally beyond all question what an accent was and how it
was made.

In songwriting, the lyrics' accents always have to correspond
with the musical accents, but there is *no* point of
correspondence in the way they are made!

I learned to use my little finger to play 5 note chords on the
guitar, so that I could get that subtle accent on the top
part, because if I play two strings with the thumb, it just
doesn't happen. Just to get that sound in Mood Indigo was
well worth it. :-)
