Maybe it wouldn't be wise to package and distribute the latest 1.3,
many of them break.

You need guile-1.3.4 (and, if you install from .deb or .rpm, you'll
probably need a guile-devel-1.3.4 too.)
In any case, the INSTALL text should list the latest requirements.
