I hope you used the \sustaindown and \sustainup commands.
It is also possible to customize the symbols used, search
for pedal at http://www.mail-archive.com/help-gnu-music@gnu.org/
to get more info.

Just use a R instead of r for the rest. In your example
that would be R2.*3 As an additional feature, Lilypond 
can remove lines in a score that only contain rests, 
see the manual.
