On the side, initially just to see if it would work out OK, I started
converting our tree to automake. It turned out to take a lot less
time than I thought and works quite well. Our portablility should be
improved and automake definitely makes our build process a *lot* less
crufty. As a bonus, I've also set it up so that the engine is built
using libtool so we now have libgncengine shared and static libraries.

However, my changes include a moderate amount of source tree
reorganization, so those of you with outstanding patches will want to
be careful to watch for the files you've modified moving around when
my patch is committed.

The current schedule for the change is that I'll make a fresh checkout
this evening (Tues) after Dave has added any pending patches. Dave
will then hold off on any more commits until I finish the merge and
send him a diff for the automake/reorg stuff. Checkouts and updates
after that will see the new system.

Speak up if this will cause undue grief and we can see about moving
the times around a bit.

Thanks
