I'm replying to the list so other folks know the resolution.  Anybody
care to
comment on why this happens?  (Comments other than, "just use Gnome
1")
Would it be appropriate to add a start_gnucash script which checked
for
gconfd and started it if it wasn't running?  (yes, I'm volunteering)

Yes, I think that would be great and could work.
