No, one can’t assume that the magic number will always be in position 41. Don’t even assume that the primary data file will always be optionally gzipped XML, because it won’t. It’s not going to change for the next version, but it will eventually change to a SQL database with XML as a format for making backups. Furthermore, building facilities into the file structure to make recovery from catastrophic disk failure is the wrong answer. The right answer is to make backups. It should be an automatic process, the backups should at the very least go on a separate physical disk and to a cloud service like Dropbox. If *anyone* reading this doesn’t have automatic backup set up, it’s your project for the day. Don’t put it off!
