Hi, Adrien.
I totally agree with your take on the reporting mechanism. And given how
good the core application is I can't help but feel that a major upgrade
of the reporting mechanism would have a significant influence on
increasing usage/uptake. That aside, I have had a quick look at PieCash
and at first glance it looks to be quite a bit beyond my computer
capability - I'll have another look later and see if i can get my head
around it, but thanks for the heads up.

The reporting mechanism is a bit ‘obtuse’ to put it mildly with respect to
custom reports. Eventually, when GnuCash is a proper database application, this
will change. In the meantime, you also have an option, if you are using one of
the database backends, to use something like PieCash which can parse the data
and allow you to write your own reports using more friendly tools than the
default reporting system. Do a web search or specifically a search here on the
list for threads about it with links.

Got it! Thank you.
One quick follow up question. Would it be possible for a gnucash developer to
add this report into the software, could I commission a developer to add this
report in (or would it be too expensive), or is it not the type of report that
could be added in?
All the best, John

Indeed. And once your data are in a spreadsheet, you can run all sorts of
sophisticated functions on it. ;)

John,
I’ll have to interpret a bit, but my guess is you want a report that shows multiple
months worth of P&L data, consolidated with each month in it’s own column. (and
maybe even a YTD or QTD column at the end)
There is no such report.
You can run a multi-column report and put each column as a different month’s
P&L, but that will repeat the account name header column.
More than likely, you’ll need to either export and import, or copy/paste
individual months into a spreadsheet and work from there. (a simple select-all,
copy/paste is usually sufficient)

Hi.
I have been looking through the report options and help files and I am unable
to work out how to create a month by month profit and loss spreadsheet. Is this
possible? and if so, do I need to download and install a plugin of some kind.
Many thanks, John
