In the light of this I'll jump in.

I'm on 2.6.21, on Windows10. I don't use Invoices. I have never attempted 
to change from the default style options.

In an Account register the date column has (just) enough space for the 
date and the arrow widget.

I have my dates in the sensible YYYY-MM-DD (ISO) format, as in every 
other application I use.
