Perhaps I expressed myself badly. I had to decide between two options,
yes, but you put them both in your item 1. Since nobody was confident
enough in 1(a) to advocate it, I followed David's advice and did 1(b).

I explicitly ruled out your option 2, because at this point I haven't
got time to do three upgrades (to 2.6.21, to the latest 3.x, to 4.13)
plus three check & repair, plus re-setting-up all my reports, plus
carefully checking everything at each stage and chasing down any problems.

I think you're being over-optimistic in assuming that everything will go
perfectly so there's no need to check anything. I assume that there will
be at least one snag somewhere that will take me significant time to
resolve. And even if there are no problems, it will take some time to
assure myself that everything is okay.
