I would guess that the code for calculating the balancing amount as the sum of the other splits is part of the code that forces the transaction to be balanced before committing.

Since SXs don't have this rule, that code to sum the other splits never gets executed.

The SX editor doesn't force you to balance the transaction. I haven't
tried this, but why not just leave it unbalanced, and when the
transaction fires you'll have a split for Imbalance. You can then change
that to the desired account.
