Agreed -- though what format for floating point output?

An application is the test files for Gnumeric math functions. It is useful
to have specific results for particular cases for reference. Maybe even
several sets of results. And some (most?) of us will lose one of the two
or more files.

Note that this will only be useful for a minority of users.
