Hello GNUnet,
A few years ago (time flies!) the idea to use ERIS for GNUnet filesharing was discussed and well received [1,2]. In particular as it would allow proper integration with GNS. Is this still the case? Are patches towards using ERIS + GNS as a replacement for the current GNUnet filesharing welcome? Are there any other considerations that need to be made before? Would it make sense to document this idea in the roadmap or elsewhere? The ERIS specification has been stabilized in a version 1.0.0 published in 2022 [3]. There are now a bunch of implementations in various languages, some small friend-to-friend networks in operation, a renewed interest in getting distributed substitutes with ERIS for Guix [4] and some integrations planned (and funded!) [5]. It would be very nice if all these developments align with where GNUnet is heading and we can look forward to a future where GNUnet is interoperable with things using ERIS. By making the vision more explicit we might be able to motivate people to contribute to it.
