If you ever decide to promote that alternate interface, the approach I would try is to sneak it in by actually making it an alternative: put the traditional interface on one tab and the "simplified" interface on another, and let users live with them for a while. People may start out conservative, but some of them will become curious and try the alternative.
Cost, from the user's point of view: a small dab of complexity (the
tab panel) and a small slice of screen real-estate (the tabs).
