BUS FARE HIKE: Transport minister Pandurang Madkaikar has said that the government has decided to marginally hike bus fares from 5 August in view of increase in prices of fuel and spare parts...He said that though the Goa Bus Owners Association was demanding a hike, most of the time private operators were charging less than the prescribed fares thereby causing adverse impact on the state-owned KTC's income. (GT) ANOTHER KUMBAKONAM WAITING? Three of the most popular schools of Panaji - Mustifund High School, People's High School and Progress High School - are found to be unsafe as far as fire safety is concerned. (GT) TO AVOID TN-LIKE TRAGEDY: The Education Department has formally decided to issue a circular to all government aided private schools to ensure that proper drinking water and toilet facilities are provided to staff and students, failing which the grants to these institutions will be withheld in future. The Chief Minister had mentioned this to Gomantak Times on Sunday. The circular will also direct the schools` authorities - private or government - to ensure that the school premises are made safe in order to avert any fire tragedies like the recent one in Kumbakonam-Tamil Nadu. (Jyoti Dhond in GT) MAN HELD WITH DRUGS: The Margao town police conducted a raid and held one Narayan Khirgal, a native from Bijapur, for possessing ganja worth Rs.10,000. Khirgal, who works as a coolie, was held with 950 grams of ganja near Hari Mandir, Margao. (NT) STRAY CATTLE: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has asked the civic bodies to inform the court of the steps taken to control stray cattle, observing that it would designate an officer from the Panchayats who would be responsible to see that these cattle do not venture into the streets. This observation was made in a letter petition filed by Audhut Kurtorkar of Pernem, who has raised the problem of stray cattle at the Mapusa bus stand. (H) MOPA AIRPORT: Three international companies have been short listed for conducting the techno-economic feasibility study of Mopa airport, while the Ministry of Civil Aviation Organisation has granted no objection to the state government to enter into a Management Services Agreement with ICAO. Stating this in the legislative Assembly on July 19, CM Parrikar said that the state government and ICAO are in the process of selecting a tenderer for the techno economic feasibility study. (GT) CM REFUTES CHARGES ON IFFI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on July 19 drew wind out of the Congress MLA`s charges on International Film Festival of India 2004, by stating that all IFFI-related decisions were taken by the Core Committee in which three MLAs of the Opposition are members. Parikar announced that the IFFI 2004 would be held as scheduled, since the Government of India had committed in writing to the state government here about holding the festival in Goa. The Chief Minister said that the four multiplexes were being constructed for meeting the requirements of International Film Festival, and its future usage will be decided later. (GT) PANCHAYAT FUNCTIONING: Functioning of village panchayats, connivance of panchayat officials in allowing illegal constructions, lack of political will to clamp down on such structures, panchayats turning into hot beds of politics and corruption, instability in panchayats were highlighted by members in the Goa assembly during the debate on demand for grants of panchayats, revenue, civil supplies, land survey, etc. (H) ACTION AGAINST FOREIGNERS: Foreigners in Goa are conducting business illegally since they have neither visa nor permission to conduct business activities in Goa, said Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes on July 19 during Zero Hour in the Assembly. He demanded action against such persons. CM Parrikar told the MLA to give him the names of such foreigners who were involved in such unlawful activities. (GT) VEHICLES STOLEN: More than 500 vehicles had been stolen from Goa since January 2001 and only 190 vehicles have been traced. This information was given in a written reply by the Chief Minister in the Goa Assembly to a question tabled by Poinguinim MLA Isidore Fernandes on July 19. (H) ENTERTAINMENT TAX: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, informed the Assembly on July 19 that the State government is likely to issue a notification waiving off entertainment tax on cinema theatres in the first week of August as proposed in the new State entertainment policy. (NT) DISMISS GOA GOVT: CONG: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro said he had urged the dismissal of the government as it had resorted to harassing the opposition MLAs and even the voices of opposition such as Margao businessman Damodar Datta Naik and Dr Francisco Colaco through raids on their establishments while it had shied away from initiating action in a number of cases. According to a report in the Catholic News Service, Archbishop Gonsalves who participated in the recent Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers` Sixth World Congress on the Pastoral Care of Tourism in Bangkok-Thailand, said: "The permissive lifestyle of foreign tourists, nudity, massages on the beaches, infatuations and drug use induce local youth to experiment with drugs and sex." (H) TOURISM SECTOR HAS GREAT POTENTIAL: The Australian Consul General in Mumbai, Mr Donald Cairns, visited the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry on July 19. After a presentation, Mr Cairns said, "I look upon this visit as an opportunity to learn about Goa and inform about Australian capabilities." (NT) PREPARATIONS FOR EXPOSITION: Preparations have started in earnest for the Exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier at the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa in November this year. The event, which is expected to attract three million people, will be inaugurated on November 21 and conclude on January 2, next year. "Being a major public event taking place after 10 years, the mood is upbeat among the Church as well as civic officials," said Fr Olavo Velho Pereira, the director of the Goa Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media. Archbishop Fillipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Daman has already issued a pastoral letter exhorting the faithful "to participate actively in the different programmes and events that will be organised at various levels, so that the entire ecclesial community of this archdiocese is prepared to receive the bountiful gifts of God on the occasion". "The archdiocese will make arrangements to provide accommodation to all people - including the economically backward," he said.
