(H) FAREWELL TO PTI STAFFER: Premanand Naik, a member of the staff at PTI, Panaji, was accorded a warm farewell on his retirement after 40 years of service. (GT) PASSES AWAY: Angelo Pereira, an engineer and an ex-employee of PTI, Panaji, and hailing from Calangute, died on September 3 at GMC, after a prolonged illness. 'SCOPE FOR BIO-TECHNOLOGY': Prof Autar K Matto, NRI American plant and agricultural biotechnologist and a reputed scientist of United States Department of Agriculture, on Friday (3 Sep) stated that there was tremendous scope for biotechnology in Goa even though it was in the infancy stage. Prof Matto said that during his talks with the government officials, he was convinced that the Goa government had shown keen interest in biotechnology and had accepted the Biotechnology policy in principle. According to him, the pharma agriculture, food processing, medicinal and herbal plants, etc, were some of the major areas in the state. (GT) SIRLIM-DRAMAPUR: Dramapur-Sirlim village panchayat comprises of the areas of both Dramapur and Sirlim. But, the government has thought it fit to bifurcate the two areas from the planning point of view, so it seems. While Dramapur finds mention in the list of villages included in the Margao PDA, Sirlim area stands omitted for reasons best known to the government. (H) BOOKED OVER EDC LOAN: The Verna police yesterday registered an offence against three directors of South Eastern Spring Pvt Ltd, a company located at the Verna Industrial Estate, for breach of trust with Economic Development Corporation. (NT) TO BE PASSED ON TO PANCHAYATS: Ninety per cent of the tax amount collected by the Industrial Development Corporation from the industrial units located in the jurisdiction of village panchayats, would now be returned to the respective village panchayats through grant-in-aid. Only 10 per cent of the taxes would be retained by the IDC as administrative costs. (NT) 'GOA WAKE UP': Today, Goa is slowly sinking under a garbage problem and no one is bothered to clean up the mess. From hulking shipwrecks on its coasts to littered streets, roads and beaches Goa today is not the pristine, clean State that is beautifully portrayed in travel brochures.And with the tourist season around the corner, urgent steps are needed to see that this waste problem does not get out of control. (Edit in Herald) 'IT'S SICKENING AFFLUENCE': Can Goa afford the type of expenditure that is planned for the proposed "Mantralaya" to be erected at a cost of Rs.10 crore adjacent to the newly built Rs.22 crore secretariat building and the Rs.35 crore assembly complex at Porvorim? What is more, there is also a plan to construct a modern MLAs' hostel near the assembly complex. That means some more crores from taxpayers pockets. A concentration of Rs.70 crore investment on buildings in a small place sound ridiculous. Would the powers that be have a look at the condition of the roads just outside the compound wall of the secretariat complex?
