And it's all thanks to their parents. http://oheraldo.in/node/11352 -------------------------------------------------------------- QUOTE OF THE DAY -------------------------------------------------------------- The new cultivar 'Cardozo Mankurad' that has originated from a seedling is not necessarily from a Malcurada or mankurad mango seed at all! The Mangifera indica is an natural triploid, i.e. it has three sets of chromosomes and there is a 'love triangle' syndrome by which one chromosome does not find a partner. thus the "Chance Seedling" is really a matter of chance. Florida mangoes -- some of them originating from the Indian "Malgoa" cultivar -- produce true-to-type nucellar seedlings. We are not so lucky in India. Vegetative propagation is the norm. The "Cardoso Mankurad" is the name given by by Dr.D.G.Dhandar to the mango identified as superior by Mr.P.A.Matthew while working in ICAR-Goa. It is from Dr.Armando Baptista Cardoz's house. ABC passed away this year. It has been sparingly multiplied but extensively publicised. To my mind it should have been correctly named as "Cardoso Bemcorada" -- in Portuguese language, Bem= good, corada=coloured -- because its peel attains the red colour at the stalk end unlike the Malcorada (Mal=bad) which hardly gets a orange tinge. Alternatively, it could be called Bemcurada (Curada=matured) as it is sweet to taste unlike the Malcurada, which is tangy even when ripe. But then, neither Dhandar nor Mathew were unduly worried about the niceties of the nomenclature. The most popular cultivar in Goa is 'Mankurad'. In neighbouring Maharashtra, it is the Alphonso cultivars that are popular and exported too. -- Miguel Braganza, agri officer and writer, on the Botanical Society of Goa mailing list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bsg-goa -------------------------------------------------------------- DEATHS AND REMEMBRANCES -------------------------------------------------------------- BENAULIM: Eustaquio Francisco Lucian Barretto, b 1963 Monddo CHINCHINIM/KENYA: Hormelio Furtado Ribeiro, Palmar Grande,75.
