Sure, I don't comprehend the activism of the saffronites and their
apologists.

Really? In all your littany of sorrows that you listed, you never
mentioned a word about the sufferings of the Cambodians, or the Berbers,
or the Amazonian Indians. The reality is, your communalism and sorrow
begins and ends with Hindus. What you accuse me of, you are yourself
guilty of.

And is that a crime? Is it a crime to express sorrow with the people who
you identify with? Let me know if the rules of the world have changed. My
sympathies, in any case, lie with the victims, unlike you, the avowed
apologist of the Hindu Right, whose sympathies clearly lie with the
perpetrators of the crimes.

So my identifying with the Muslims leads to incidents like those that
currently happened in Gujarat? Nice, very, very nice. I can assume that
your in-laws also identified with the plight of the Muslims in Gujarat,
more than with the plight of the Nagas. Can we expect them to become
suicide bombers now?

It is very interesting to note that the apologists of the Hindu Rights like
to blame the victims for everything. During World War II, Hitler used the
same philosophy to exterminate the Jews, I see that Sunila and her comrades
of the saffron color love to follow in those footsteps. After all,
Veer Savarkar was an avowed admirer of Hitler and Mussolini.

Hi everybody,
I just want to tell all of you(wherever you all may be) that I'm new on this
list. I have never been in Goa in my life, am thinking on coming over this
year or the next, we'll see. My grandfather (Armando Duarte and his brothers
and sisters) were Goans who finally found their ways all over the globe.
Some of their relatives still live in Mapusa and Porvorim and I only
recently got in touch with them. Whenever I have some time I try to find out
more about my family, where do they come from, who were they, ...
Is there someone who can tell me where in Goa I can do some research
regarding this search? What for information can be found in the Xavier
Centre for Historical Research?
Another thing: I read about a Lambert Mascarenhas award: who was or is this
Lambert Mascarenhas?

So long for now and if it seems I'm swimming on the wrong list, just tell
me.
Martin
Btw thanks Viviana for your help and I'll send you (if interested) my list
of brilliant Belgian movies!!

Anjali,

It is in general very difficult to get a fellowship for the first year, specially for
non-technical fields and if you are only doing a masters. I have not heard of any goan
institutions providing any/significant amounts of funding either :(

One's chance of getting an assistantship increases if you apply for a Ph.D program as
it suggests to the administrators that you plan to stay in school a long time - thus
making it worthwhile for them to fund you better.

Your best bet would be to try and fund yourself for the first semester and do
extraordinarily well. You coud supplement yourself by getting a part time job on
campus.

Assuming you were to get an assistanship/funding for the following semesters, you
should check out in advance the levels of funding involved. For example, besides
having a cash value, there may also be other benefits such as waiving the out of state
tuition fees.

Marlon
