Instead, with the current obsession with organised religion we dig ourselves into a pit. >> In response to the above, I humbly submit: What doth it profit a (wo)man if (s)he gains the whole world, but suffers the loss of his/her soul? There is no point in trying to twist Ash's poignant prophesy for any generalizations. Religion (from 'religare') is designed to "bind us back from jungle rule. IMHO, without religion, Goans would fit the computer prompt of Goons :( I would like to initiate a survey of all Goanetters on the following question: Are you "for" or "against" religion? Let us plan to close this survey at midnight, Friday, May 31, 2002. Hopefully some computer wizard will volunteer to tabulate and provide the results :-) Viva Goa, Viva Goacom! In their memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the NGO said it is now clear that in the US itself where the vaccine originated, there is a serious debate on the potential for disaster, through the vaccine. "The fact is that the long term effects of the vaccine have not been studied or tabulated, particularly since the vaccine is less than a decade old", the Citizens for Health said. Claiming that it made some investigations in the matter, the NGO said the vaccine has led to severe health problems, adding that some diseases like Arthritis, vision problems, trigeminal neuralgia etc. It pointed out that the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons has called for an immediate moratorium on the vaccine pending further research about dangerous side effects. "Children younger than 14 years are three times more likely to die or suffer from the adverse reactions after receiving Hepatitis B vaccines than to catch the disease", the NGO said quoting Dr Jan Orient, Executive Director of AAPS. Moreover, the NGO said the National Vaccine Information Centre (USA) has opposed mass vaccination of children against Hepatitis B stating, "It is a national experiment on our children for a disease that is not highly contagious". - --------------------------------------------------- HERALD 16/5/02 page 3 - --------------------------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy ======================================= ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 May 2002 06:29:50 -0000 From: "santoshhelekar" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re:[Goanet] Scientific Method - --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], "J. The rest is >not. > Dear Joel: I think you have it all backwards, perhaps to defensively position yourself on what you thought was strategically a higher ground. It is you who said that your religious belief is based on "carefully weighing the logic and evidence", by following "the scientific method". As far as I am concerned, I have always maintained that religious belief is based on faith. I do not consider that the supernatural events surrounding the life of Jesus or any other saintly human being amount to a testable scientific hypothesis, even in the limited and esoteric Popperian sense. The conjecture that you are asking me to refute is not falsifiable at all, and therefore, utterly unscientific. The value of religion resides precisely in the fact that it is based on faith, because it gives believers something to cling to in spite of contrary evidence, in times of need. Best Regards, Santosh P.S.: And by the way, I do not want to convert you to my way of thinking. I merely want you think about what I am saying, and then choose to agree or disagree. Actually, if you knew me personally you would have realized that I would like you more if you disagreed with me. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 23:49:11 +0200 From: Viviana <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [Goanet] Scientific Method NOT!
