In the early hours of June 21, a gang of burglars raided the residence the late Babu Naik, a former minister and political heavyweight, at Aquem in Margao. The culprits decamped with cash and ornaments, totally valued at around Rs.2.75 lakh. The police, who promptly appeared on the since within minutes, nabbed two suspects--Garibdas Daheliya and Dada Pawarfollowing a hot chase along the railway tracks. However, a woman accomplice, carrying the box containing the booty, escaped by dodging the police dragnet. Further South in Quepem, six shopsa grocery shop, a cold storage, a tailoring shop, a wholesale liquor and gift shop, a video library and a fast food counter--were attacked by burglars, who lifted CDs, broilers, booze, soft-drinks, cigarette cartoons, perfume bottles, cash and other items, all worth around Rs.50,000.
