He said that Goa being located along the sea coast could be "extremely vulnerable" to global changes particularly sea-level rises. Inundation of low-lying coastal areas, salinity intrusion into ground water reservoirs, besides global climate change related disasters were some of such impacts enlisted by Dr Pachauri as seemingly possible in this tiny State in the next six to seven decades. (WE-GT) UNHEIGIENIC BEEF SEIZED: In a raid conducted on Saturday morning, a team lead by the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services, Dr H Faleiro and Dr PM Rane, seized around 3,000 kg of beef from a pick-up van at Arlem while it was proceeding to Margao. The department has clamped a crackdown on beef imported into the State in unhygienic conditions from across the border, mostly from Karnataka. (H) POACHERS HAVING A TIME: Although there are two range Forest officers, one forester and 8 Forest guards to protect the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary spread over 86 sq km, they are heavily outnumbered by poachers in the area who prefer the jungle paths for hunting, to evade the forest guards. Poachers with double barrel guns and crude bombs kill wild animals like boar (randukor), bison (gaur) and mouse deer, the last one being on the endangered list. (WE-GT) FOR ALZHEIMER PATIENTS: The Dementia Society of Goa will shortly be opening a Day Care/Respite Centre at Britona for patients suffering from Alzheimer disease, the most common cause of dementia. (H) NOISE POLLUTION: Following a host of complaints received over the use of loud speakers during religious ceremonies, the authorities on Saturday issued instructions to the police to observe the Supreme Court directives as well as the Madhya Pradesh Noise Pollution rules vis-à-vis religious places…The Additional Collector instructed the police not to allow use of loudspeakers after 10 pm and before 6 am, irrespective of the places of worship. The biographical play, which captures the life span of the Maratha King during the 17th century, consists of 150 artistes, besides an elephant, horses, camels and a bullock cart. The 50-feet tall set takes 20 days' work by 25 artisans for completion and 7 days to dismantle it.
