CLIMATIC CHANGES CAN AFFECT GOA: Goa could be severely vulnerable to the 
impacts of perceived global climatic changes and its planners will have to 
take this into account opined Dr RK Pachauri, Director General, TERI, while 
addressing a press conference in connection with an ongoing core training 
course on infrastructure regulation and reform. He said that Goa being 
located along the sea coast could be "extremely vulnerable" to global 
changes particularly sea-level rises. Inundation of low-lying coastal 
areas, salinity intrusion into ground water reservoirs, besides global 
climate change related disasters were some of such impacts enlisted by Dr 
Pachauri as seemingly possible in this tiny State in the next six to seven 
decades. (H)

MUMBAI-GOA PASSENGER SHIP: Although the government has given the green 
signal for the renewal of the Mumbai-Goa passenger ship service, the 
RTOtraffic sectionhas refused to provide the necessary clearance for the 
parking of vehicles outside the Captain of Ports jetty, in Panjim…Satyagiri 
Shipping and Shahi Shipping had approached the River Navigation Department 
with a proposal to start a passenger liner with a capacity of around 300 
passengers plying between Mumbai and Goa in the beginning of 2002. (H)

JUNGLE SAFARIS FOR TOURISTS: The process of tying the jungle safari with 
reputed charter tour operators is being considered so that the limited 
number of foreign tourists, interested in jungle treasure could be 
identified before sailing. Some charter operators have shown the 
inclination to join in the jungle safari. (NT)

HOUSE BURGLED IN SIOLIM: The residence of Sunita Nagvekar, an Assistant 
Public Prosecutor, at Pilimbi in Siolim, was burgled and cash and gold 
ornaments totally valued at Rs.2.5 lakh stolen. The thieves entered the 
house by breaking the grills of the rear window. (WE-GT)

UNHEIGIENIC BEEF SEIZED: In a raid conducted on Saturday morning, a team 
lead by the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services, Dr H Faleiro and Dr 
PM Rane, seized around 3,000 kg of beef from a pick-up van at Arlem while 
it was proceeding to Margao. The department has clamped a crackdown on beef 
imported into the State in unhygienic conditions from across the border, 
mostly from Karnataka. (H)

POACHERS HAVING A TIME: Although there are two range Forest officers, one 
forester and 8 Forest guards to protect the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary 
spread over 86 sq km, they are heavily outnumbered by poachers in the area 
who prefer the jungle paths for hunting, to evade the forest guards. 
Poachers with double barrel guns and crude bombs kill wild animals like 
boar (randukor), bison (gaur) and mouse deer, the last one being on the 
endangered list. (H)

ORLIM'S OUTSTANDING DUES: Financial position of the Orlim village panchayat 
is not very sound, concerted efforts maybe made to collect all outstanding 
dues in order to improve the same. This is one of the observations made by 
the auditors in the yearly audit for the year 2000-2001. (WE-GT)

FOR ALZHEIMER PATIENTS: The Dementia Society of Goa will shortly be opening 
a Day Care/Respite Centre at Britona for patients suffering from Alzheimer 
disease, the most common cause of dementia. This was announced by Dr Chico 
Vas, the Vice President of the Society. (H)

NOISE POLLUTION: Following a host of complaints received over the use of 
loud speakers during religious ceremonies, the authorities on Saturday 
issued instructions to the police to observe the Supreme Court directives 
as well as the Madhya Pradesh Noise Pollution rules vis-à-vis religious 
places…The Additional Collector instructed the police not to allow use of 
loudspeakers after 10 pm and before 6 am, irrespective of the places of 
worship. (H)

SEWERAGE SYSTEM FOR CANDOLIM, CALANGUTE: The managing director of Goa State 
Infrastructural Development Corporation, Mr Suresh Parulekar, said that he 
would undertake sewage construction project at Candolim and Calangute 
Village, very soon. (NT)

CONGRESS FLAYS GOVT DECISION ON PUBLIC HOLIDAY: The executive committee of 
South Goa District Congress Committee has strongly condemned the action of 
the Goa government of canceling Gandhi Jayanti public holiday (on October 
2), terming it as an "anti-national act" and not an administrative 
decision. (NT)

FUNCTIONS AT CHILDREN'S PARK: Forum for Senior Citizens and Senior Citizens 
Forum, Goa, at its general body held recently in Margao, unanimously 
demanded a stop to religious functions in the children's park which is 
exclusively for the use of children. (WE-GT)

PLAY ON SHIVAJI: "Janata Raja", an audio-visual mega stage production on 
the life of Shivaji will be staged at the Goa Engineering College ground 
Farmagudi from December 2 to 7. The biographical play, which captures the 
life span of the Maratha King during the 17th century, consists of 150 
artistes, besides an elephant, horses, camels and a bullock cart. The 
50-feet tall set takes 20 days' work by 25 artisans for completion and 7 
days to dismantle it. (NT)

SALGAOCAR, SPORTING CLUBE WIN: Salgaocar Sports Club swamped St Anthony's 
Club, Colva, 4-0 at Tilak Maidan in Vasco, while 2000 Sporting Clube de Goa 
defeated Dempo Sports Club 1-0 at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, in the second 
leg match of the Kingfisher GFA Professional League. Salgaocar SC, the only 
undefeated team so far, continue to top the League table with 22 points, 
followed by Vasco with 16 points. Sporting Clube with 13 points scaled up 
to the third berth.

FLAME OF HOPE: The Special Olympics torch "Flame of Hope" will arrive in 
Goa on September 28 as part of the torch run which will cover 18 cities all
