"HUMAN ERROR" MAY HAVE CAUSED CRASH: While admitting a possibility of 
"human error" for the mid-air collision of the two Navy Illyushin IL-38 
planes, chief of Navy Staff Admiral Madhvendra Singh, however, reiterated 
that the flight of two bulky planes in close formation as routine drill, 
which was permitted by the Indian Navy. (H)

TOLL MOUNTS TO 17: The number of casualties in the mid-air collision has 
risen to 17, following the recovery of more bodies at the site of the 
crash. (H)

"OFFICERS MORE PRECIOUS": Retired commander Sharad Varik expressed his 
profound grief over the death of 12 naval officers including 7 pilots in 
the IL 38 mishap. "It is easy to replace an aircraft as it is merely an 
economic loss. But the loss to the Navy due to the death of pilots and 
sailors is severe and cannot be made good," Varik said. (GT)

SECOND FDR: The Flight Data Recorder of one of the aircraft which was 
involved in the collision, is yet to be recovered. (H)

BUSINESSMAN ROBBED: A vegetable wholesaler, Habi Munshi (60) was robbed of 
Rs.1.18 lakh at knife-point in broad daylight at the Kadamba Transportation 
on Wednesday forenoon. Munshi was accosted by two youngsters armed with 
koitas, when he had gone to relieve himself in the sparse bushes near the 
inter-State section of the KTC bus stand. (H)

BENAULIM'S GARBAGE WOES: A solution to the vexed garbage disposal problem 
eluded the coastal village of Benaulim as the local panchayat failed to 
arrive at any decision on this burning issue at it's monthly meeting held 
on Tuesday. (H)

GOOD RIDDANCE: A major though brief two-hour clean-up exercise by employees 
in almost all government departments on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti 
yielded truckloads of files, waste paper and dust. Cadre and class was 
forgotten as secretaries, heads of departments and senior officials 
participated in the exercise from 10 am to 12 pm to clean up their working 
environment and the surroundings with their subordinates. (GT)

PAY PARKING IDEA ANNOYS BUSINESSMEN: Panaji Municipal Council's idea of 
starting pay parking on the city's busiest roads18th June and Atmaram 
Borkarhas not found favour with the owners of businesses and some other in 
the area. Stating that it will not solve the parking problem but instead 
give rise to others, they suggested that a committee of NGOs, traders and 
citizens be formed to look into it and find solutions. (GT)

ROAD MISHAPS: One person (Rasheed Khan) died on the spot and two others 
injured in a collision at Sarzona between a tipper and two scooters. (NT)

AITUC RALLY: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, AITUC general secretary 
Christopher Fonseca led a rally of workers in Panjim yesterday. While 
marching along the city streets the rally raised slogans condemning 
communalism and child labour.

LABOUR UNREST: A total of 38 factories have been closed and nearly 1,000 
employees have been rendered jobless during the last few months, according 
to Labour Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar. While delivering his speech at the 
38th session of the Indian Labour Conference recently in New Delhi, Dr 
Amonkar stated that the reasons for the closure of the factories was labour 
unrest and mismanagement rather than economic problems. (GT)

TOURISM DAY CELEBRATED: The Tourism Department celebrated the World Tourism 
Day by organizing a painting contest for school children at the Colva beach 
on Friday. The theme of the competition this year is eco-tourism, the key 
to sustainable development. (H)

TOURIST ADVISORY FURORE: The hysterical reaction of the Chief Minister, 
Manohar Parrikar, to the travel Advisory of the United Kingdom, warning 
women against sexual assaults, is unwarranted. Nor is such a 
confrontational approach likely to improve matters. The ground reality is 
that the number of cases of assaults on women whether it is foreigners or

TALENT SEARCH CONTEST: The fast-fading old Goan world of Kunbis, Kharvis 
and the romance of their song came alive at Calangute parish hall yesterday 
morning as students from 19 North Goa schools vied for honours in a talent 
search competition including a folk dance contest. (NT)

KONKANI LITERARY CONFERENCE OF YOUTH: The fifth Yuva Konkani Sahitya 
Sammelan will be held this year at Maxem in Canacona taluka under the joint 
auspices of Satyavati Soiru Angle Higher secondary School and Goa Konkani 
Akademi. The sammelan is scheduled to be held from the 6th to 8th December.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES: Patricia Pinto, a municipal councillor of Panjim, 
participated as a panellist at the two-day workshop on "Gender Equality and 
Local Governance" held on September 26 and 27 by the International Centre 
for Municipal Development of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in 
association with the City of Gatineau, Quebec. Patricia also delivered a 
talk at the University ofBritish Colombia, Vancouver, on "Making Democracy 
Work in Goa New Experiments in India's Local Government System". The 
International Goan Organization has asked her to lead a discussion entitled 
"Environmental Issues facing Panjim, and Goa's towns and villages", on 
October 9 at 7.00 p.m., at the Mississauga City Hall. The meeting is free, 
and all are invited to attend and present their views in the discussion.

MASHELKAR AWARDED: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research 
Director, Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, was awarded the Dr Vishveshwarayya 
Memorial Award on October 2, for his outstanding contribution to the field

team by beating them 2-0 at Fatorda, and a fine brace by Nitin Pradhan 
helped formidable Vasco SC to a convincing 3-1 victory over Cabral SC in
