FOODGRAINS SCAM UNEARTHED: The Civil Supplies Department has unearthed a
scam in which more than 20 tonnes of foodgrains has disappeared from its
godown in Cortalim. Three officials have been placed under suspension,
sources said. It is suspected that the FCI-supplied foodgrains were move
out to be replaced with poor quality stock. This was noticed before the
latter reached the godown. (H)
MHADEI MEET: The Union Minister for water Resources, Arjun Sethi, has
convened a meeting of the chief ministers of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra
at New Delhi on Saturday 16 November, to find an amicable solution to the
issue of diversion of Mhadei river waters. (GT)
DIES OF ELECTROCUTION: Babnu Vishwas, a 25-year-old construction labourer
from West Bengal who was residing at Bansai-Cacora, died of electrocution
on Thursday while he was at work at Kharkhataghati in Sanguem. While he was
pushing some iron rods for construction, one rod came in contact with live
high tension wire. (H)
ONE DIES IN HUT BLAZE: Yellawa Sangappa Hidgi (35), died due to burn
injuries, while her husband and two children were injured, when a chimney
lamp fell on their bedsheet, setting the hut, in which they were sleeping,
on fire in the wee hours yesterday at Kate-Baina in Vasco. (GT)
COURT OKAYS RESORT AT BAGA: The Supreme Court has given the green signal to
Piva Resorts Pvt Ltd to construct its resort "Sunset Dunes" on the Baga
beach. The Goa Foundation had challenged the permission given to Piva to
construct a vacation ownership resort on the grounds that it violated the
CRZ violations, in a Public Interest Litigation. (H)
BURGLARS STRIKE POST OFFICE: The Agassaim post office was burgled by
unknown culprits, according to a complaint filed by the post master. (H)
ROADS SUB-STANDARD: Ten per cent of the blood spilled in road accidents
around the world are on Indian roads. According to statistics made
available by the Institute of Road Traffic Education, the detrimental
implication of this staggering statistic can be judged by the economic
impact on society, estimated to be about Rs.55,000 crore annually. (H)
PORVORIM CONSTITUENCY DEMANDED: The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association
have faxed a letter to the Chief Election Commission of India, JM Lyngdoh,
New Delhi, asking for a complete overhaul of all legislative constituencies
in Goa in view of increase of area and size of population. The PRWA have
demanded a separate Porvorim Constituency in view of 20,000 voters residing
on the plateau which is currently under the jurisdiction of the
constituencies of Aldona, Calangute and Saligao. (H)
STONE AGE? A visit to some of the remote villages in Barcem in the Quepem
taluka will make you wonder whether this is a part of Goa. Besides being
deprived of roads, the residents here use kerosene lamps in the absence of
electricity, depend on herbal medicine due to lack of medical facilities
and rely on spring water flowing from the mountain top as their only source

AI'S "REACH OUT TO GOA": Air India yesterday had the symbolic launch of
their programme "Reach out to Goa" at the hands of Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar, where the SSC and HSSC toppers, a senior teacher and a

FONSECA'S PAINTING AT PILAR: An exhibition of the paintings of legendary
Goan artist Angelo da Fonseca from St Estevam was inaugurated on November 9
at the chapel of the Pilar Seminary by Dr Manohar Sardessai. The exhibition
will be open till December 8 from 9 am to 12.30 in the morning and from 3
pm to 6.30 pm in the evening. (H)
"MHOJI MAIM" EXCELLENT: Mario Menezes' latest production "Mhoji Maim Mhoji
Dusman" is an extremely well written non-stop tiatr with excellent
dialogues. Though the title is slightly misleading, the plot does hold

REMEMBERING REGINALD FERNANDES: Friends and well wishers of Reginald
Fernandes, the popular Konkani novelist and musician from Siolim, will
organise a function on November 16 at 5.30 pm to commemorate his seventh
death anniversary. Reginald's memorial at Reginald Fernandes Road at the
Siolim market will be garlanded, followed by a traditional Ladainha,
rendition of the great musician's evergreen songs by Anjuna's Pietros band
and a recital of his poems, in which former Speaker and noted tiatrist
Tomazinho Cardozo will participate.
