SOUND RULES RELAXATION: The government is working out a mechanism, including enacting a suitable Act to relax the provision of Sound rules, to give a boost to night life entertainment in the State. Briefing newsmen, tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco disclosed he has already discussed with the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on how to exempt Goa from the provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Sound control rules. "Goa today depends on tourism. Foreign tourists are today complaining of lack of entertainment at nights," he said. (H)

GAMBLING ACT TO BE AMENDED: In its new resolve to crack down on matka with an iron hand, the State government will shortly issue an ordinance to amend the Gambling Act to raise the fine and period of imprisonment for the offenders and the abettors. (GT)

ACCUSED HELD: Gurudas Topyo Gaonkar, the alleged accused in the Shiroda murder (of 14-year-old Sucorro Vaz) was arrested by the head constable of the Ponda CID crime branch near the MRF factory on November 19. (NT)

TO DETER FATHER FROM DRINKING: In a surprising volte face, the 18-year-old daughter, who claim to have been molested by her father at Goa Velha, has now stated that she fabricated the entire story in order to prevent her father, allegedly a habitual drunkard, from drinking further. (H)

CHARAS SEIZED: The staff of the anti-narcotics cell police station in Panaji seized 80 gm of charas worth Rs.8,000 and arrested the alleged accused, Lakshimikant Verama of UP near the Calangute Tourist Resort. (NT)

FOUND DEAD IN TOILET: A spinster from Porvorim, Sharayu Pednekar, believed to be mentally retarded, was found dead in the toilet of her house in the Housing Board Colony on Tuesday. When relatives phoned Sharayu from Mumbai and there was no reply, it prompted them to contact the Porvorim police. (H)

ETHANOL-PETROL: The 'mixing' will be allowed and mandatory. Oil companies in Goa and eight other states in India will supply petrol blended with five per cent ethanol from 1 January 2003, in a bid to save the country valuable foreign exchange, boost the agro sector and curb smoke pollution. (GT)

MATHANY WARNS: Cortalim MLA Mathany Saldanha has warned that the people of Cortalim, Utorda and Cansaulim areas will be forced to stop all ongoing works of the Konkan Railway if the Corporation fails to provide easy access to cross the railway line in these villages. (H)

BENAULIM SARPANCH OUSTED: The Sarpanch of Benaulim, Ms Guilherminha Leitao, was voted out by a margin of 6 votes in a special meeting convened by the BDO, Salcete, yesterday. (NT)

INJURED IN ROAD MISHAP: Selwyn Saldanha, a 60-year-old man from St Francis Vaddo in St Estevam, was injured when his kinetic Honda scooter was struck by a Maruti van near the Pinto garage at Old Goa on Tuesday afternoon. (H)

C O CHARGE-SHEETED: Jose Braganza, former Chief Officer of the Quepem Municipal Council, has been chargesheeted by the Vigilance Department for illegally regularizing the construction of a house there. (H)

LIBRARY IN EVERY VILLAGE: CM Manohar Parrikar has stressed the need to have a library in each and every village and at taluka level so that everyone gets the privilege to read and educate oneself. (H)

DOLPHIN POND MOOTED: If everything goes well for Valentino Vaz, Goans and tourists alike may have the pleasure of seeing dolphin shows in the state itself. (H)

AS WAY OF BEING DISCIPLE OF JESUS: Affirming that the duty to unveil the essence of evangelization in Christian faithful rests with bishops, Pontifical Mission Societies President in Rome Archbishop Malcom Ranjith said the church would cease to exist, if it failed to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. The archbishop was delivering the keynote address on the four-day animal programme of the Pontifical Mission Organisation, for 30 bishops from all over India, at the Caritas Holiday Home in Panjim on Tuesday. PARISH OF NAVELIM: The parish of Our Lady of Rosary in Navelim is not only rich in the number of parishioners but through its activities. "Rosary College at Navelim is the only parish college all over Goa," stated Fr Jose Antonio D'Costa of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church, Navelim. The village has two high schools and a higher secondary school. (NT)

MAGICIAN D'SATISH, founder president of "Extend Education Theater" will stage his eighth educational magico-drama, titled "Jeeyo our jeeno do" based on his latest script "Fenny, strangers and the other dangers", on HIV/AIDS awareness. The first show will be held at MPT's auditorium, Sada-Vasco, on December 1 at 4 pm. (H)

DADU'S ULTIMATE GOAL: Even as a teenager, Dadu Mandrekar of Mandrem has been fighting for the Dalit cause. Bewildered, angry and hurt at the injustices meted out to Dalits in his native Pernem taluka and across India, Dadu converted to Buddhism in n1982. He claims to be the first Goan to convert to Buddhism in recent years…Dadu's published writings in Marathi reflect the Dalit community's pain. His first collection of poems was titled "Shaapith Surya" (The Cursed Sun). Then came "Beishkruth Gomantak" (Boycotted Goa) and third is a translation of the Buddha's life "Sathyacho Shodh".
