A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
ARCHBISHOP GREETS GOANS: The Archbishop of Goa, Rev Raul Gonsalves along
with Auxiliary Bishop Filipe Neri Ferrao have extended their greetings to
the people of Goa on the occasion of Christmas. (NT)
MIDNIGHT SERVICES USHER IN CHRISTMAS: Chimes of church bells, bursting of
crackers and solemn religious services marked the Christmas celebrations
throughout Goa in commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem
more than 2000 years ago. Almost all the churches in Goa conducted solemn
mid-night services where the preachers reminded the faithful of Jesus'
message of love and brotherhood. (H)
CRPF SECURITY: Two companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (Rapid
Action Force) have arrived in Goa this evening to assist the State
administration for the smooth celebration of Christmas and New Year. This
is for the first time that the central para-military force has been called
in Goa on the eve of New Year celebrations. (NT)
VAJPAYEE, ADVANI COMING: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Deputy
Prime Minsiter LK Advani will be shortly in Goa for holidaying. Vapayee
will be on four-day visit from 29 December while Advani will be on a
six-day visit from January 2. (GT)
KRC HIGH SPEED TRAIN: The high speed (150 kmth) trial of Konkan Railway
train will commence from December 26. The train will leave Margao station
at 7 am and touch Roha at 10.50 am. The trial runs will continue for next
10 days. (GT)
ILLEGAL QUARRYING AT CURTORIM: After nearly 25 years of constant protests
by locals, the Administrator of Comunidades seems to have taken cognizance
of the exploitation of a hillock at Curtorim. Though formal action is
awaited, the Comunidade has decided to take action against all those
involved in the exploitation. (NT)
DELEGATION OF JAPANESE DALITS: A delegation of Japanese Dalits, under the
leadership of Nobuaki Teraki, recently visited Goa. (H)
HELD FOR SELLING CHARAS: After eons, the Anti-Narcotics Cell finally netted
a kiosk owner while selling charas at Deulvaddo, Vagator on December 23.
The accused Eknath Savlo Agarwadekar, resident of Chapora, was nabbed for
selling 333 gms of chars to a foreigner. (H)
NO SILENT NIGHT FOR DACTULEM: The odour in the wells at Dactulem in Vasco
continues to seep out, giving the residents of the area sleepless nights
due to fear of fire. The government agencies are continuing to stop the
smell and seepage of fuel in the wells by pumping out the polluted water. (GT)
INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE: The First Asian American International
Medical Conference "Medial Advances in the New Millennium" will be held
from January 3 to 5, at Cidade de Goa, Dona Paula. (H)
RIVONA TO OPPOSE GARBAGE DUMPING: Members of the Rivona panchayat, on
December 21, unanimously passed a resolution to oppose the purported move
of the Margao Municipal Council to dump its garbage at Cupvaddo ward in
Rivona village. (H)
UNIQUE CALENDAR: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, will release a
unique calendar for the year 2003, brought out by Heramb Prakashan. The
calendar centres round twelve illustrious Goans, who have excelled in their
respective fields. The twelve luminaries include Sohirobanath Ambiye,
Jeevabadada Kerkar, Deepaji Rane, Bhau Daji Laad, Krishnambhat Bandekar,
Jagannathbuwar Borikar, Dada Viadya, Wazebuwa, Dharmanand Kosambi,
Khaprumama Parvatkar, Dinanath Mangueshkar and Bakibab alias BB Borkar. (NT)
ATTORNEY ASSAULTED: Chorao Comunidade Attorney Polycarpo C D'Souza has
alleged that he was assaulted by two persons during the course of an
inspection of encroachments on Comunidade land in the village organised by
the Administrator of Comunidades, Central Zone recently. (GT)
HELD FOR LOUD MUSIC: The Anjuna police on Monday night registered an
offence against Samson D'Souza of Revora, Bardez, for playing amplified
music without legal permission at Bamboo Restaurant, Starco, Anjuna. (GT)
TANZANIANS HELD FOR OVERSTAYING: The Mapusa police arrested two
TanzaniansJaffari Mithera and Murad Mohammed Ilyazin the Mapusa market on
December 23 and charged them for overstaying in the country. (NT)
