RS.3 CR FOR DEVELOPMENT OF MALA: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said that the Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation has sanctioned an amount of Rs 3 crore for upgradation project of the Mala area wherein a lake in the ward would undergo beautification, besides improvement in the sewerage system. "Mala will be converted into a beautiful locality, within the next 6 months," he observed. Mr Parrikar, who earlier inaugurated the 9-day long 'Fontainhas - Festival of the Arts', organised by the Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG) in association with the Panaji Municipal Council (PMC), stated that heritage festival was a new concept with community participation on a large scale being tried for the first time in the state. Mr Ashok Naik, the PMC chairman released a special tile designed by Alexyz to commemorate the event. The inaugural function was followed by fireworks, Indian classical music performances by Baban Marathe and troupe and Marche de Fontainhas by Dr Francisco Colaco and a Bombay troupe. A special performance of the Portuguese and Latin American music participated by noted musicians Remo and Lucio Miranda will be held on January 26. The cultural fiesta stretching from Corte de Oietero junction to the crossroads near Mushtifund School has the local houses partly opened for visitors and converted into galleries, where exhibitions of the works of 34 artists from different parts of the country are being held. The street exhibitions and art workshops of crochet, embroidery, puppet and little pottery, besides mix of traditional, folk as well as contemporary music and dance performances, and traditional food stalls form other attractions. PROTECT GOAN IDENTITY, CULTURE: CM: The Goa Yuva Mahotsav comes as a refreshing change especially in the backdrop of the resurgent language controversy. While core leaders like Konkani Bhasha Mandal president, Prof Shyam Verenkar, was wary of painting any controversy, the lower rung organisers like chief convenor, Mr Mangaldas Bhat and working committee president, Mr Chetan Acharya, indirectly spoke of protest against what they termed as "insult to the motherland" at Curchorem. The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, who briefly made his presence felt at the inaugural function due to his "busy schedule," appeared to be treading on safe grounds. Mr Parrikar said the red soil has this inherent quality to calm down anybody. However, he said, the same peaceful land is also capable to become furious and appealed to the youth to stand up in fury to protect Goan identity and culture at any cost. Around 4,000 students and youth from all villages and towns have gathered at Osmitai Nagar, a huge pandal erected in Curchorem, for the Yuva Mahotsav, a festival of performing art, depicting various facets of the Goa identity (NT)

SAHANI TO HOIST TRI-COLOUR: Governor Kidar Nath Sahani will hoist the national flag to kick-off the Republic Day celebrations in State, today at 8.45 am, at the Parade Ground, Campal, Panjim. He will then review the parade and present awards to outstanding personalities. On the occasion platoons of the navy, army, police, fire service, home guards, NCC, scouts and guides and contingents from various schools in State will participate in the combined parade. Later students of schools from Panjim and surrounding areas will present mass PT display, dance and songs. Mr Sahani in his message said, "fifty three year ago, the people of India took the destiny of our nation into our own hands by bringing into force the Constitution of India based on classical tenets of democracy to ensure to all citizens justice, liberty, equality and fraternity." BJP-BACKED PANEL BAGS 8 SEATS: In the keenly contested board of directors election to the Goa State Co-operative Bank, an apex cooperative bank in Goa, held yesterday, the Sahakar Vistar panel, backed by the ruling BJP secured eight seats, while six seats went in favour of the cooperators' group Sahakar panel. Both panels have claimed the support of two unopposed directors, who were elected from Daman and Diu, respectively and they hold the key in deciding the power in the bank. (NT)

ENERGY PARK IN MARGAO: The Urban Development Minister, Mr Digamber Kamat, stressed on the need to boost agriculture which is the core sector of the economy. He was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding day function of the all-Goa agriculture exhibition and flower show here today. Mr Kamat stated that youth should be encouraged to take up agriculture as their means of livelihood. "This will help to wipe out unemployment" Mr Kamat said, adding that the government will also encourage them. (NT)

DESSAI AWARDED PRESIDENT'S MEDAL: The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Nilu Shankar Raut Dessai has been awarded the President's Police Medal for this year. The announcement was made in New Delhi on the eve of Republic Day. Mr Raut Dessai joined police service as sub-inspector in 1981 and was promoted to the post of police inspector in 1991 and later promoted as Dy SP last year. Presently Mr Raut Dessai has been posted as Staff Officer to the Director General of Police (Goa). (NT)

"RECRUITMENT RULES WILL AFFECT GOAN YOUTH": The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president, Ms Nirmala Sawant, has expressed shock and surprise over the state government's action of relaxing the domicile period for the candidates seeking jobs in government service from neighbouring states. Addressing a press conference at the Congress House, Ms Sawant said the government has released an advertisement in local dailies inviting applications for filling in vacancies for the posts of junior engineers and stenographers in Electricity Department. She said the department has asked the candidates to furnish 15 years residence certificate from the taluka mamlatdars. (NT)

BENAULIM PANCHAYAT IN A FIX: A few foreign nationals have come up with unique ideas to solve the garbage problem in coastal village Benaulim. Lack of political will has masked their ideas, they claim. The visitors reportedly traced the sluggishness on the part of locals and the lack of enthusiasm among the elected members on these ideas. On December 19, 2002 at the special gram sabha meeting, these foreigners had made suggestions and expressed their desire to contribute financially to wipe out these garbage menace from Benaulim. They even suggested to install garbage bins at different points in the village to control the menace. (NT)

HELMET AWARENESS DRIVE: During the last four days as many as 3,000 two-wheeler riders from Salcete were issued pamphlets on 'helmet use' by the Margao traffic cell. The work of issuing pamphlets will continue for few more days, stated a police officer. According to the information available from the police inspector, Mr Dharmesh Angle, the teams of Margao traffic cell have been entrusted with the task of distributing the pamphlets. The police also requested the riders to wear helmets as the accident rate has gone up in last three years. (NT)

WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE: A 35-year old spinster, Ms Jyoti Arjun Salgaoncar, from Shirgal ward of Dhargal, committed suicide by hanging herself in her house yesterday evening. Pernem police said that Ms Salgaoncar lived with her elder bachelor brother and committed the tragic act in a part of the house that remains closed. (NT)

ASSAULTED IN ANJUNA: Anjuna police have registered offences against one Shiri and his three other friends for assaulting Mr Harshad Naik and his wife at D'Mello Waddo, Anjuna early yesterday morning. According to Anjuna police, the accused Shiri and his three friends, whose full names and addresses are not known, threatened to kill Mr Naik, his wife and a foreigner with a sharp edged weapon. The accused men also assaulted Mr Naik, his wife and the foreigner and caused injuries to them. (NT)

PLAINT AGAINST MARGAO RESIDENT: The Margao town police on Friday registered an offence against Shaik Javed, a resident of Malbhat-Margao, for outraging the modesty of a college girl from Margao. Police said that a complaint was lodged against Shaikh Javed on Friday for outraging her modesty and also threatening her. Sources stated that the alleged accused made a phone call at her residence and threatened that he would deface her face by throwing acid if she narrates this incident to her parents. (NT)

BURGLED AT FARMAGUDI: Burglars decamped with cash of Rs 7,000 from the residence of one K S Satyanarayan at Farmagudi-Ponda on Friday night. Ponda police said the incident occurred as burglars broke open the latch of the front door. (H)

MARKETING OF FARM PRODUCE: What should the Agriculture department officials do in order to take declining agriculture to new heights in the State? "Think and act like the "Marwaris," was the advise Minister for Agriculture, Dayanand Mandrekar, gave to the department officials at the exhibition venue here yesterday. Addressing the gathering, Mandrekar said the time has come for the officials to think and act like Marwaris. "The officials should not only think of production but how much to sell the produce," he said laying stress on returns from farming. (H)

COAST GUARD BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Governor of Goa Kidar Nath Sahani will declare open the much-awaited 3rd Coast Guard Open Beach Volleyball tournament, on Monday, January 27, at Miramar beach, 4.00 p.m. A record number of 54 teams drawn from all over the State will slug it out for pride, prestige and honour in the three-day championship, organised by Coast Guard (Goa region) as part of the Coast Guard anniversary celebrations. A special feature of this championship is a women's event which will see 11 teams vie for honours including defending champions Arpora United, runners-up Spice Girls, Crown Club, Xaviers College, GVM College, Directorate of Sports amongst others.
