GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
February 02-03, 2003
MARATHI LOVERS URGED TO RENEW MOVEMENT: Konkan-Marathi Sahitya Sammelan
president and noted Marathi writer Madhu Manguesh Karnik, on February 2,
called upon the Marathi lovers to start a movement with renewed vigour and
hoped that the long pending demand of Goans for equal recognition to
Marathi would be fulfilled. He was speaking at the concluding function of
the three-day eight Konkan-Marathi Sahitya Sammelan at the Kala Academy
complex at Campal in Panaji. (GT)
LANGUAGE STATUS: The president of the Gomantak Marathi Bhasha Parishad,
Ponda, Ramnath Naik, stated that there was a legal controversy over Konkani
being the official language of Goa since it was passed by the erstwhile
Union Territory Goa, Daman and Diu in 1986. He pointed out that if after
attaining statehood, Konkani automatically becomes the official language of
Goa then it should also in the same manner become the official language of
Daman and Diu, which is presently an Union Territory. (GT)
MOTHER TONGUE OF GOANS IS KONKANI, SAYS CM IN SALCETE: Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar has said he has a strategy up his sleeve to resolve the
language imbroglio dogging the state since liberation and categorically
stated that the mother tongue of Goans is Konkani. Speaking at BJP's ganv
chalo abhiyan in Navelim constituency, he, however, pointed out that though
Konkani is spoken by over 85 per cent of the Goans, a significant number of
the population still continues to write in Marathi. (H)
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ACT IS IN ENGLISH: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated
that the recent controversy over the language issue was merely due to
ambiguity in the Official Language Act. "The tragedy of the state is that
the state language act is in English," is what Parrikar said. (WE-GT)
DRIVER KILLED: An Elf Gas tanker carrying LPG for Meta Strips Limited,
Sancoale, rammed into an electric pole at Balli-Cuncolim, killing the
driver, Karupaswami, from Tamil Nadu, on the spot at about 4.45 am on
February 2. (GT)
TACKLING TB: The TB and Chest Disease Hospital in St Inez, just one of the
hospitals treating TB patients, reports an average of around 80-90 newly
infected patients coming in each month, while the average number of TB
patients being treated is around 800-900 per month, inclusive of the newly
infected ones. (H)
19 SARPANCHAS VOTED OUT: Nineteen sarpanchas and 15 deputy sarpanchas were
voted out of office by no-confidence notices from 1 February last year to
31 January this year. Of these both, sarpanchas and their deputies from 11
panchayats, were shown the door simultaneously. (GT)
ASSAULT ON PUBLIC SERVANT: Vasco Judicial Magistrate First Class Judge
Ashley Noronha on Friday released on bail one Eliterio Santiago of Raia, in
connection with wrongful restraint and assault on a public servant. (H)
RIBANDAR PANCHAYAT: Residents of Sao Pedro at a largely attended public
meeting held on Saturday called upon the Goa government to take immediate
steps to set up a Ribandar panchayat in keeping with the long-standing
demand of the residents of the area. Meanwhile, Adv Aires Rodrigues has
stated the government should not hold the referendum on the demand for a
panchayat as it has not made it known whether the government would accept
the verdict of a referendum held by the Ribandar Citizens Committee under
the supervision of an Independent NGO. (H)
LOCALS EXPRESS ANXIETY: Endangerment of the Salmona spring, in Saligao, and
vegetation in its vicinity is yet another instance of man's insensitivity
towards environment. With rising pollution in the area locals now fear that
very soon they will be denied of safe drinking water. Hill cutting and
blockade of traditional pathway leading to the spring by some private
parties has defaced the spring site. (H)
FOOD POISONING REPORT MALICIOUS: Reacting to a news item about a "large
number of students in Sattari falling ill after consuming food supplied
under mid-day meal scheme", Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that
prima facie the repot appeared to be malicious. (WE-GT)
NEGI TO BE NEW CS: A senior IAS officer, Mr Negi, has been posted in Goa as
the new chief secretary upon the transfer o former chief secretary Mr
Baleshwar Rai to New Delhi. (NT)

latest equipment for speedy investigation into offences and prompt services
to the members of the public. The officials of police inspector ranks and
above will get a mobile set very shortly. The special commando force will
be kept ready to meet any eventuality. (NT)
REGIONAL IDENTIFY ASPECT: "These exclamations of regional identity cannot
break the shackles of regionalism," observed Dr Prahlad Wader, the former
head of the Department of Marathi at Goa University, during a symposium on
"Regional identityA boon or bane for literary culture?" at the Konkan
Marathi Sammelan. He said that the nature, traditions, festivals, cultural
programmes, besides people and their roots constitute part of one's
regional identity and hence thoughts should be directed to study whether
regional identity plays a constructive or a destructive role in the
society. (NT)
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED: Mr Julius Nayak, a student of the VM Salgaocar College
of Law, has been awarded a research scholarship by Fundacao Oriente, to

feast of Our Lady of Candelaria at the centuries-old church on February 2.

THE PRICE WAR IN TELECOM: There has been a hue and cry over the revision of
tariff by fixed line operators (the good old telephone services). They have
announced an increase in rentals, a reduced pulse rate (one call is now two
minutes instead of three) and a halving of the number of free calls
included in the rent. The Communist Party of India said "this is another
way of compelling fixed phone users to change over to cell phone use and
conferring benefit to the private monopolist operators". (Chanderson
Mirchandani in Herald-Mirror).
MORJIM: MORPHING…Vestiges of the past are alive in the once-sleepy village
of Morjim, in Pernem taluka, but with the passing of time and the
commissioning of the Siolim-Chopdem Bridge, slowly, tourism is blowing the
winds of change over the village. The local fishermen at Tembvaddo still
row the canoes and pull in their nets manually but the beach area is
beginning to fill up with fancy restaurants. The Olive Ridley Beach
Restaurant, stated in 2000, and named after the turtles that come here to
nest, serves among other delicacies, the Morrocan Couscous , Russian
Goulash and Morjim Mussels. (Joaquim Fernandes in NT)
SPECIALITIES OF GOAN VILLAGES: The famous Goan fish-curry made and served
in an earthern pot called "kuinem" tastes better with its aroma of the
earth. The famous Goan "ukdo" parboiled rice (xit) cooked and served in a
typical Goan earthern pot called the "budkulo" tastes lovely. Yes! This is
truly the speciality of every Goan village. It is Goa's true rural
heritage. A beautiful floral heritage of Goa is reflected by the fragrance
of its small "abolim" like "rattan abolim", "pishi abolim" and another
yellowish coloured variety. The Government of Goa should declare "abolim"
as the state flower of Goa. The botanical name of "abolim" is crossandra.
