IT'S A RECORD: GOA NETS 150 CR: The state achieved a record revenue
collection of Rs.150 crore, including Rs.59 crore in sales tax, in a single
month during January 2003. Speaking to reporters on February 3, Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed that this reflected buoyancy in the
economy and tourism, industry and other sectors were looking up and revenue
from tax and non-tax sources had gone up. Parrikar said a record Rs.56
crore revenue had been collected in a single month during 2000 when the
one-time payment vis-a-vis the sales tax waiver had been implemented during
Faleiro government's tenure. (GT)
SAUDI CEILING PLAN TO HIT INDIAN MIGRANTS: Indians working in Saudi Arabia
would be the worst hit by the kingdom's plans to put a 20 per cent ceiling
on the number of expatriate workers and their dependents. The unprecedented
plan, which would be executed within 10 years, was taken by the manpower
council chaired by the Interior Minister, Prince Naif, yesterday (Feb 2),
Riyad's "Arab News" said. (UNI report in NT)
RIDE ON WHEELS OF DISCIPLINE: Bus owners in North Goa have decided to
introduce discipline in the operation of their fleet from 10 February with
the cooperation of the government agencies and the traveling public. North
Goa Bus Owners' Association president Vishnu Rama Naik stated that from
Monday onwards commuters would be charged the government approved fares and
that they would be issued tickets accordingly. The bus timings would be
strictly adhered to. (GT)
QUALITY OF MEALS TO BE MONITORED: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar
on February 3 said that a trained person would be entrusted with monitoring
quality of food packets being given to primary school children in the
Sattari taluka under the state mid-day meal scheme. (NT)
CALANGUTE COPS SEIZE CHARAS: The Calangute police seized 1.3 kg of charas
valued at Rs.1 lakh from a 21-year-old youth, Dola Singh (a Kulu Manali
native), near the Calangute beach at 2.35 pm on February 3. (NT)
GARBAGE DUMPING IRKS SALIGAO RESIDENTS: Indiscriminate dumping and burning
on Saligao plateau of plastic wastes generated by hotels and establishments
in the coastal belt has angered residents and raised fears among them of
health problems. Even as dumping of garbage started in the mid-eighties,
the quantum of plastic wastes and frequency of trips by vehicles have
increased in recent years. Saligao Civic and Consumer Cell has challenged
before the Bombay High Court at Goa the use of the plateau for garbage
disposal by the Mapusa Municipal Council and Saligao panchayat. (GT)
RS.ONE CRORE FOR GARDEN: Canacona MLA Vijay Pai Khot has promised grant of
Rs.1 crore to the Canacona Municipal Council for stetting up a garden with
all kinds of amenities. (GT)
CREDIT GUARANTEE CEILING HIKED: The Goa cabinet on February 3 hiked the
State's credit guarantee amount ceiling from the current Rs.550-crore level
to Rs.700-crore. Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar
indicated that the government may resort to market borrowings in order to
fund some infrastructure projects to be implemented through the Goa State
Infrastructure Development Corporation. (H)
HOPE FOR VEHICLE THEFT VICTIMS: Goan victims of vehicle theft can now look
forward to a higher probability of recovery with the commissioning of the
Motor Vehicle Verification Counter at the Goa police headquarters in
Panjim. The facility is linked to the Delhi-based National Crime Records
Bureau, which co-ordinates information on stolen and recovered vehicles
nationwide. (H)
SURVEY OF NAVELIM DRAINS: The Navelim Sarpanch, Anna Carneiro, has said she
will write to the Salcete Block Development Officer to assist the panchayat
body in conducting inspection of four drains constructed in the village way
back in the 90s. (H)
MANDREM BEACH: Mandrem Sarpanch Vishwanath Shirodkar has complained that
the work of cleaning the Mandrem beach assigned to one contractor by the
Tourism department has not been completed within the stipulated time and
the beach remains littered with plastic bags, plastic bottles and other

PILAR GENERALATE BUILDING: Cardinal Ivan Dias, Archbishop of Bombay, will
bless the new Generalate Building of Missionaries of St Francis Xavier,
commonly known as the Society of Pilar, at Pilar Niwas in Alto Betim, on
Tuesday (Feb 4). The date was chosen in remembrance of the shift of the
Society from Agonda to Pilar on February 4, 1890, according to a press
release issued by Fr Peter Raposo of the Pilar Fathers.
HOTMIXING OF POLEM HIGHWAY: The Executive engineer of Highways, DGS Borkar,
has informed Poinguinim MLA Isidore Fernandes that the work of hotmixing of
the dilapidated highway from Poinguinim to Polem will commence tentatively

TRINITY CHURCH BUILDING: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the
newly constructed building of Holy Trinity Church, Benaulim, at an
impressive function on February 2. Archbishop Raul Gonsalves blessed the
spacious premises which will house the Holy Trinity Parish Centre and the
St Aloysius school, built at a cost of around Rs.one crore within a year's
