BAN CONVERSIONS IN GOA: Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader and Jaipur Peethadish Acharya Dharmendraji called upon the Goa government to enact a law banning religious conversions in the state as some Muslim and Christian religious heads were busy planning conversion activities in the state. Referring to the activities of Believers sect in Goa, during a press conference at Mapusa, Dharmendraji disclosed that these activists were busy luring the Goan youth with their only motive being conversion. These activists even give financial aid to poor people and attempt to break Hindu families. (GT)

GLOBAL SEMINAR ON MINERAL TECH: Mining engineers, Goan iron-ore exporters and the Indian Bureau of Mines have hosted a three-day seminar on mineral processing technology at Kala Academy. The seminar, which began on February 6, is being attended by about 49 foreign experts and more than 200 domestic participants, according to Controller General of IBM, KS Raju.

KERALA EYES GOA: Kerala's government and tourism industry has begun turning its attention towards Goa in a bid to attract a "high spending" segment of international tourists, who make their way to this tiny State. Travel agents and Goa's tourism trade representatives played audience to an impressive road show organised by Kerala Tourism in Panjim on Wednesday. (H)

FORMER BANK MANAGER IN POLICE NET: Former manager of the Goa state Co-operative Bank branch at Junta House was arrested on February 5 for fraudulently sanctioning a loan of Rs.4 lakh to purchase a vehicle. (GT)

SECRETARIAT COMPLEX: Even as fifty percent of the work on the new Secretariat Complex at Porvorim has been completed, the new building to house the administrative offices is likely to be ready by April 2004. The project has been approved by the Tenth Finance Commission under Special Problem Grant out of which Rs.315 lakh have been received by the State. (GT)

FRESH WATER FISH: With the success of prawn farming in the State, the Department of Fisheries is now gearing up to boost fresh-water fish culture. The department has completed the preliminary work of the project. With this, the fish loving Goans will be able to buy a bounty of mrigal, rohu, catla, common carp, grass carp, silver carp and other types of fish and at reasonable prices too. (GT)

PANAJI CARNIVAL: Organisers of Carnival in Panjim hope to continue their task of reviving the fiesta of yore by encouraging more floats with a traditional motif. The Panaji Carnival Committee, in association with the Directorate of Tourism, will organise the Carnival fiesta from 1 to 4 March. (GT)

TOURISM AND JOBS: People-oriented tourism will be given boost and IT industries suitable to solve the problem of unemployment will be set up in Mandrem constituency, stated Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during his one-day tour of the constituency on February 5. (GT)

FREEDOM FIGHTERS GRATEFUL TO FALEIRO: While expressing their gratitude to the Union Home Minister, Mr LK Advani, for granting the central Sanman Pension to 761 freedom fighters, who fought against the Portuguese, the Goa Government Remunerated Freedom Fighters Central Committee has specially thanked the lone Rajya Sabha MP and former union minister, Mr Eduardo Faleiro, for bringing the matter in the Rajya Sabha and strongly pursuing the matter with the Home Minister. "KONN ZABABDAR": Well-known producer and director, Bonifacio Dias has completed his sixth film "Konn Zababdar" and will be released soon in Goan theatres. The cast of the film includes Mitsu, Dhiraj, Roshan, Rico Rod, Fatima, Domnic, Anna, Luis, Jyoti Kunkalienkar, Mario de Vasco, Platilda, Peter de Benaulim, Ben Envangelisto, Anil Kumar and authors. PMC TO ENGAGE PROFESSIONALS: In a bid to give the city of Panjim a special touch of class, the Panjim Municipal Council has decided to engage the services of professionals as consultant from various fields before undertaking projects during the next two months. The PMC will be signing an agreement with engineer Sylvester D'Souza and Architect Dean D'Cruz's M/s Mozaic will provide the expertise on the designing, civil and engineering works for the Campal-Miramar stretch. GRANT FOR SPORTSMEN: Siolim Village Panchayat has resolved to grant Siolim Sodiem Sports & Cultural Association Rs.1 lakh to facelift the sports ground and to provide poor and deserving sports persons financial aid to improve their performance at the gram sabha held on Sunday. (GT)

NO TRUST MOTION IN SERAULIM: Four of the seven-member Seraulim panchayat moved a no-confidence motion against the Sarpanch, Mr Antonio Rosario Fernandes on February 5. (NT)
