PRIORITY FOR I T, AGRICULTURE: Goa Governor Kidar Nath Sahani, on February 7, said the government is attaching top priority to sectors like agriculture, rural industry, tourism and information technology in its endeavour to create "sustainable livelihoods" for the Goan populace. Delivering his maiden address to the Goa Legislative Assembly in Hindi, Mr Sahani said that tourism being the single largest economic activity in the state, would continue to be a strategic area of development. BILLS AMIDST WALKOUT: The government on February 7 introduced three bills, each seeking to amend the existing laws on panchayats, sales tax and luxury tax, amidst noisy protests and walkout by MLAs of the Opposition Congress. (H)

VASCO'S PROGRESS HAMPERED: Political rivalry and toppling games have proved to be a stumbling block to progress in port town Vasco. In just over a couple of years, two chairpersons and three vice chairpersons (of the Vasco Municipal Council) have fallen by the wayside. As if this was not enough, the incumbent, Milton C Baretto, is likely to be the latest casualty after being in office for just 105 days. (GT)

FISH EXPORTS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, on February 7 stated that a number of initiatives are being taken for the promotion of marine exports and urged the exporters to concentrate on value-added exports. Mr Parrikar was presiding over the 14 th India International Seafood Show 2003 at Campal. (NT)

MID-DAY MEAL: 10 BICHOLIM STUDENTS FALL SICK: Around ten students from two primary schools in Bicholimthe Government Primary School and the Our Lady of Grace Primary Schoolcomplained of stomach-ache, nausea and vomited too, on Thursday (Feb 6) after eating fungus-infested bun bread being given distributed under the state mid-day meal scheme. "GIVE CHILDREN THE FOOD THAT NOURISHES THEM": What Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar described as "teething troubles" of the government's mid-day meal scheme, has upset many a stomach of primary school children. When it happened to the students in Sattari, the powers that be tried to hush it up. But its recurrence in Bicholim taluka on Thursday (Feb 6) exposed the cavalier fashion in which the government introduced the scheme rather post-haste. (Edit in GT)

ASSEMBLY CONDOLES KALPANA CHAWLA, PALKHIWALA'S DEMISE: The Goa Assembly yesterday condoled the death of two prominent personalities, eminent jurist Nani A Palkhivala and woman astronaut of Indian origin, Kalpana Chawla, who passed away recently. (GT)

"THIS AIN'T BUSINESS": The government was yesterday put on the mat by the Congress MLAs over its lackadaisical attitude to business procedures and inadequate sittings of the Goa Legislative Assembly. Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar said that in any given Assembly session business has to be transacted for 60 days. He charged that presently the sessions called twice in a year were only to fulfill he constitutional obligation. (GT)

FUNERAL PUT OFF: The funeral of one Francisco Manuel Fernandes of Calvim-Aldona, who died on Thursday afternoon, was postponed by a day due to a complaint by his son Anthony Fernandes, presently residing at Mumbai. Anthony lodged a complaint with the Mapusa police station against his mother Carolina, brother Melwyn and sister. (GT)

'NOT A HIGHWAY': IRTE president, Rohit Baluja, has said the national highway passing through Goa does not merit being called a highway due to the traffic pattern and the location of houses and shops adjoining the route. He was speaking at a function at Nuvem to mark the commencement of a five-day programme to bring about traffic awareness among the villagers. (H)

CORK ON WINE MAKERS: The Salcete taluka excise office has commenced an intense drive to check evasion of excise by distillery owners in the taluka. Excise inspector Vinod P Palyekar during the drive intercepted a vehicle transporting liquor worth Rs.15,000 from one of the distilleries without proper documents. (GT)

SOCORRO PETROL PUMP: The Panjim bench of the Bombay High Court has vacated the earlier interim order directing M/s Ticlo & Sons to stop operating their petrol pump at Socorro along the National Highway as the petitioner Sitaram Bandodkar, Panjim, under whose name a petition was filed challenging the construction, has now stated that he did not file the petition. ARRESTED FOR MURDER ATTEMPT: Acting on a complaint filed by Margaret Moraes from Veroda, who is a member of the Cuncolim Municipal Council, the police arrested on Dharamji Dessai, a resident of Beklevaddo, Cuncolim. (GT)

KONKANI DRAMA FESTIVAL: Goa Konkani Akademi has a real treat in store for theatre lovers in Pernem in the coming week with the eleventh Konkani Drama Festival of the Akademi set to begin from 11 February at Parshem. At the festival theatre lovers will get to see prize-winning dramas and tiatros from the competitions held this year by the Kala Academy and Sankalp Theatre. (GT)

HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE EXPO: The two-day exhibition organised by the Goa college of Home Science will conclude on February 8. The exhibition is open to the public from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. (H)

PROMOTING HERITAGE: "The recently concluded Fontainhas festival has dramatized the potential that heritage tourism in the state offers. The festival saw a large number of foreign and domestic tourists flocking to it. Besides a lot of Goenkars, who only vaguely knew about Panjim's famed Latin quarter, and even residents of Panjim, who had not discovered its unique flavour and charm, came to the festival. The fact that the residents of Fontainhas threw open their living rooms embellished by art exhibitions contributed to the success of the festival." (Edit in Herald)

FEAST AT VALPOI: The parishioners of Valpoi will celebrate the feast of their patron, Our Lady of Lourdes, on February 11. Fr Savio D'Souza shall be the main celebrant for the vespers while Fr Carlos Mendes as the main celebrant for the High Mass at 10 am. (NT)

BRITISH NATIONAL DIES: John Painter, a 52-year-old British national, died while jogging at Baga beach at 11.30 am on February 7. He was living in a Candolim hotel and used to go to the Baga beach for jogging, where he apparently suffered a heart attack, according to the Calangute police. (NT)
