Bailancho Saad pays tributes to Kalpana,
launches International Women's Day celebrations
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bailancho Saad launched its month long International Women's Day
celebrations on Saturday at its premises by paying tributes
to Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian-born woman to go to space.
Those present at the programme termed Kalpana as a 'path-breaker'
for millions of women and men, and a 'torch-bearer', who not only
dared to dream, but worked hard to actualise her dreams despite great odds.

The common refrain that emerged at the meeting was that If opportunities
and conducive environment are provided, society will have Kalpanas
as a rule rather than as an exception and that the best tribute that one
can pay to Kalpana Chawla is to demand as also work towards creation
of an enabling environment.

The International Women's Day celebrations were launched saluting
the struggles of several other pioneering women like Savitribai Phule
who started the first school for women, Anandibai Joshi,
the first lady doctor.

The thrust of this year's International Women's Day is 'celebrating
the joys of being women in our own right and pledging to continue
our struggles to bring back the joys which have been taken away
by patriarchal prejudices, communalism, casteism and globalisation'.

Several workshops on various themes will be held in different parts of Goa.
The first workshop titled 'Dalit Women - Rising from Shadows' will be held
on February 10, at Bhagwati High School, Pernem.

On February 14, at Ideal School, Pilgaon, participants will deliberate
on "Whither Self-help groups?". Issues relating to countering violence
will be debated at Multipurpose Hall, Old GMC Panjim on February 16.
"Women In Employment", "Tackling Sexual Harassment at the Workplace",
"Empowering Women in Local Self-Government", "Combating Communalism",
"Naka-Bandi for Trafficking in Women and Children", "Reviewing Family Laws",
"Detoxifying Alcohol Policy", "Engendering Education", "Towards Healthy Women"
are the other workshops slated during this month.

Bailancho Saad will also be organising a week-long Women's Film Festival
in the first week of March in the various theatres of Goa.
The International Women's Day will be commemorated on March 8,
with a public programme at Azad Maidan, Panjim from 3 pm onwards,
states press release issued by Bailancho Saad.
