LAW TO TACKLE ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS SOON: Suitable amendments to the Goa Panchayat Raj Act 1994 will be placed before the next session of the Goa Legislative Assembly in a bid to eliminate the large scale illegal construction on panchayat land by people in the State. This assurance was given by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during the question hour on February 11 while replying to a starred question from Curtorim MLA Francisco Sardinha. (GT)

LANGUAGE ROW: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar continued to come in for sharp criticism for raking up the language issue, again on February 11 during the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor's address. Dr Wilfred de Souza (NCP) and Francisco Sardinha (Cong) devoted a major part of their speeches to take strong stands on the language issue. (H)

GOVT FLAYED FOR NEGLECTING CONSTITUENCIES: Opposition MLAs accused the BJP government of neglecting their constituencies and that genuine beneficiaries were not receiving the benefits of the Dayanand Social Security Scheme. The Opposition also charged that the government had committed injustice to minorities, failed to provide play grounds in every village and to frame rules to Goa groundwater Regulation Bill, for a slump in industrial growth and units closing down at several places, for not protecting khazan bunds against incursion of saline water, failure to select candidates from the minority community during the recruitment, for providing wrong information as far as crimes against women were concerned.

TENDER KICKS UP ROW: Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu and Power Minister Digambar Kamat locked horns over the issue of granting 15 per cent price preference to a Small Scale Unit surpassing the lowest bidder for supply of galvanized iron rods and plates. (GT)

BAKRI ID CELEBRATIONS: Idd-al-Azha, popularly known as Bakri-Idd, would be celebrated in the State today with Idd prayers being held at Idgahs and mosques all over the State. (NT)

ROAD WIDENING IN CALANGUTE: The road widening initiatives of the Calangute panchayat, already in progress, are expected to broaden the market-beach road to an amazing width of 15 mt, according to Calangute Sarpanch, Mr Joseph Sequeira. (NT)

"MAKE SPORTS COMPULSORY SUBJECT": In a bid to encourage students to participate in sports, Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar has insisted that the State government should make sports a compulsory subject in the school curricula. Narvekar was addressing the Sports Meet 2003, organised by the Penha da Franca panchayat for the students at Porvorim. (H)

PM TO VISIT GOA: The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, will make a halt of 10 minutes in the State on February 14, while on his way from Hubli to New Delhi via Dabolim. (NT)

MORMUGAO COUNCIL CHIEF, DY OUSTED: The chairperson ,Milton Barreto, and his deputy, Dhanajay Naik, of Mormugao Municipal Council were ousted on February 11 by 11-0 votes. (GT)

FRAUD IN VASCO BANK? Lt Commander TH Chowfsin, a retired Navy officer, has alleged that some staff of the Vasco branch of a leading bank committed criminal breach of trust and transferred a processing fee of Rs.8000 to an unidentified person's account and withdrew the same. (GT)

AAG THALI QUITS: Additional Advocate general Vilas Thali has tendered his resignation from the post, it is learnt. According to reliable sources, Thali quit following an inquiry ordered by the Bombay High Court at Panaji in connection with a petition filed by Advocate Peter D'Souza stating that Thali was paid excess bills amounting to Rs.1.12 lakh. INJURED FOREIGNER DIES: One Ave, a foreigner, succumbed to his injuries after the motorcycle, which he was riding, collided against an oncoming bike near Goa Medical College Hospital on February 10. (GT)

ONE DEAD, SIX HURT: One person died while six others were injured in three separate mishaps involving as many as six trucks and a car, at Mollem, Sancorda and Sanvordem on Tuesday. The mishap at Sanvordem disrupted the flow of traffic, as about 500 mining trucks plying along the route were held up for nearly two hours. (H)

TWO HURT: In an accident reported at Porvorim police station, Rhyaz D'Costa and Fina Cardozo of Alto Duler, Mapusa, were injured after their motorbike dashed against a scooter near ACDIL School, Porvorim. (GT)

JOURNALIST'S BIKE STOLEN: The Hero Honda "Splendor" motorcycle belonging to journalists Raju Nayak parked below his flat near Sahakar Bhandar, Pajifond-Margao, was robbed in broad daylight on Monday afternoon. (GT)

MINI HYDRO PROJECT IN MHADEI BASIN: The Mhadei Basin National Hydro-electric Power Corporation Limited, a government of India undertaking enterprise, which has been entrusted the task to prepare a feasibility report on a hydro-electric power project in Sattari taluka, has identified seven mini hydro projects and is working on the estimated costs. GOA, FIRST FOR GOANS: "When Government of Goa talks of providing 'gainful employment', one presumes that the employment would be for Goans first and others later. This is as it should be since the objective of all economic planning activity in every State is to create opportunity for gainful employment to and increase the standard of living of the people of the State. Among the instruments the State generally used to ensure that locals get a priority over non-locals in Government and private sector employment, the Official Act of the State is the most effective." FIVE YEARS LATER: "The CM, at the Konkan Marathi Meet, has rightly said that he needs five years to settle the language row. By that time there will be hordes of Marathi-speaking Maharashtrians coming down to Goa and settling here while an equal number of Goans settling abroad. TO RELAX BAN ON "PAN MASALA": The All-Goa Merchants Federation has sought chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's intervention in the controversy regarding the sale or distribution of sweet supari and allied products, which are claimed to be different from "Gutka" and "Panmasala". (H)

EXODUS OF ARTISTS: Lack of infrastructure and the right environment forced many a talented Goan artists to seek greener pastures in foreign lands. However, things were changing for the better now, said Goan Hindi film actress Varsha Usgaonkar. When newsmen asked her whether her recent association with Konkani has come a bit late in her career, Usgaonkar replied in the negative. "I don't think I am late. The infrastructure might have kept me away but now I will devote more time for Konkani because it's my mother-tongue," she asserted. (H)
